The Accra Technical University (ATU) Main Auditorium, hosted the first national Youth Scrabble Champions Qualifiers, organized by the Scrabble Association of Ghana.
The one-day championship served both as a competitive selection criterion and a skills development exercise for the young minds. More than one hundred young players at school going age participated. The aim of the competition was to gather the best young minds to compete and select the core to form the first national youth team.
Ghana will for the first time send a team to participate in the African Youth Championship in Nairobi scheduled for August 14–17, 2025 and as such the championship served as a justify-your-inclusion. The competition was opened to players in the under-15 and 19 categories for both genders. In the U-15 category, Michael Somuah dominated the event, winning all 6 games with an impressive cumulative spread of +1222.
He was closely followed by Kweku Ebbah Kumi, who secured 5 wins and a spread of +658. Other top performers who each recorded 5 wins included: Krankye Branor Appiah, Beatrice Adjoa Sam Omidiji, Isaac Cudjoe Mensah, Kayla Naa Ardua Tagoe, Etornam Nador Ajo and Esther Nhyiraba Shehu.
Players that excelled were decorated with medals and presented with certificates. The coordinator of the event who is the World No. 8 scrabble player and Ghana number One player, Mr. Charles Haizel Tachie Menson, said the championship was timely as it holds the keys to Ghana’s future in the sport.
Some participants described the championship as competitive. To encourage them to do more the leadership of the Scrabble Association of Ghana presented two sets of scrabble boards to the Tarkwa Club. Ghana is also preparing to host the World English-Language Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC) in November 2025 at the Rock City Hotel. Over 40 countries are expected to participate.
