Pre-tertiary teachers threaten strike over rising attacks by students

The Pre-tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (Pre-TTAG) has threatened to embark on a strike over the growing spate of violent attacks against teachers in Senior High Schools across the country.

In a strongly-worded statement, the association—formerly known as CCT-GH—expressed outrage over the rising cases of robbery, rape, gun-wielding, and physical attacks on school campuses, describing the trend as a grave threat to teachers and their families.

“The recent wave of indiscipline in Senior High Schools is a major concern. Acts such as robbery, rape, and physical assaults have become rampant in schools nationwide,” the association lamented.

They cited several alarming incidents, including the fatal stabbing of a final-year student by a colleague at O’Reilly SHS, the shooting of a female student in the eye at Adventist SHS, and the stabbing of a teacher in the eye by a student at Asuoso SHS.

Pre-TTAG is demanding swift intervention from the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES), questioning their inaction and silence over the issue.

“The deafening silence of our employer is very disturbing and raises the fundamental question of how issues of teachers’ welfare and safety in general are relegated to the background,” the statement read.

The association has hinted at possible industrial action if no concrete steps are taken to ensure the safety and protection of teachers across the country.
