POLAND: GHANA WHEELCHAIR TENNIS TEAM SHINES AT 2025 PLOCK ORLEN OPEN IN WARSAW

The team included veteran player Maclean Atsu Dzidzienyo, Bernard Yawson, Daniel Laryea (popularly known as Lorlor), and the only female participant, Stacy Konadu Mensah, alongside Team Manager Kwabena Afriyie Siaw.

This tournament marked a crucial comeback for the athletes, all of whom had lost their ITF world rankings due to a prolonged absence from international competition. Their participation in Warsaw now presents them with a vital opportunity to regain their ITF rankings and fortify their path towards qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

In the Men’s Singles, Maclean, Bernard, and Lorlor advanced to the Round of 16 but could not progress further. In the Women’s Singles, Stacy Konadu Mensah won her Round of 16 match, reaching the Quarterfinals, where she eventually bowed out in a spirited contest.

In the Doubles category, Stacy teamed up with a Japanese player to secure an emphatic 6-2, 6-2 victory in their quarterfinal match. However, they were narrowly defeated in the semifinals by Ruby Bishop (Great Britain) and Donna Broek (Netherlands) in a match that ended 7-5, 6-1.

Team Manager Kwabena Afriyie Siaw said the tournament has re-energised the players and highlighted the potential they have. The Ghana Tennis Federation Wheelchair Tennis continues to advocate for increased support and sponsorship to ensure ongoing international exposure and success for its athletes.
