ACCRA: HERO’S WELCOME FOR BLACK ROCKETS WITH MEDALS FROM GUINEA

These are the gallant trio that made Ghana proud at the just ended 3rd African Youth Boxing Championships in Guinea- Conakry.

The three pugilists that raised the flag of Ghana higher were Mathias Ashitey in the Flyweight -51Kg, George Nii Nortey Dowouna in the Bantamweight -54Kg and Desmond Pappoe for the Middleweight division.

They all won gold in their respective divisions. Boxing fans throng the arrival hall at the KIA terminal 3 to welcome them. Despite the individual titles, Ghana placed third overall.

Captain of the side, Mathias Ashitey, said they will train harder for future championships. The leader of the three-man team, deputy trainer of the Black Rockets, Joseph Martey, said with support they can do much more for the country. Leadership of the Ghana Boxing Federation formerly the Ghana armature boxing federation said the feat chalked up is a true testament of their resolve to raise the flag of Ghana higher during international events.

It is the hope of pundits that the feat chalked up by the team will spur on greater investment in the sport.
