These are members of the National Weightlifting team, the Black Cranes. They recently returned from the African Seniors Weightlifting Championship held in Mauritius, where they made the nation proud under challenging circumstances.
Team captain Lance Corporal Gabriel Owusu- Headquarters operations unit, led by example, clinching an impressive three silver medals for Ghana in the +109kg class. Other members of the team namely Paul Agramah in the 55kg finished in 5th. The only female in the team, Marrie Koko Agbah Hughes, who competed in the +87kg, finished 6th despite her late arrival.
Sylvanus Kwame Kugblenu did not compete due to technical issues. Team captain Lance Corporal Gabriel Owusu- Headquarters operations unit, praised the timely intervention of the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Adams and the Director-General of the National Sports Authority Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah ensuring their participation in the championship, which had earlier been in doubt due to administrative setbacks.
In a touching moment, Lance Corporal Gabriel Owusu personally handed over his medals to Mr. Ampofo Ankrah and his team made up of deputy director General Mr. Gideon Hammond and head of technical Mr. Jeffery Owusu, as a symbol of appreciation and dedication.
The director-general of the NSA Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah praised the athletes for their resilience, determination, and unity. The Black Cranes say they are already back to training, with hopes of bettering their performance at upcoming international competitions.
